But my Discharge [from the Union army in 1865] gave no date of my birth only born in Canada and my age 28 years. I know of no record of my birth and all of my folks are dead long years ago as i was born in an Indian Country and far from civilization in them days and my folks were in the employ of Hudson’s Bay Co. this is all i know regarding my birth and this is the reason my age is conflicting but i am the identical person who served in the civil war and i have been with Hudson’s Bay Co. most of the time with the company since 1867 till present day…” -Stephen Lafricain. “Donald Smith Takes Over Rigolet.”
