Died of wounds sustained n the battle for Ledeghem in what became known as the "Final Advance" that let to the armistice on November 11th. The same battle, incidentally, in which Tom Ricketts won the VC.)

Newfoundland Book of Remembrance.

Grave Reference: IV. D. 6.
Location: The DUHALLOW ADS.CEMETERY is located on the Diksmuidseweg N369 road direction Boezinge. From the station turn left into M.Fochlaan and go to the roundabout, turn right and go to the next roundabout. Here turn left and drive to the next roundabout, here turn right into Oude Veurnestraat. Take the 2nd turning on the left which is the Diksmuidseweg. The cemetery is on the right hand side of the road just past the first turning on the right.

John's personal file in the National Archives of Canada contains a note from the Chief of Staff, Newfoundland Militia to Phoebe Blake, dated 13/11/1920. It states that the inscription on John's gravestone reads, "Here lies an Eskimo from the outports of Labrador. May he rest in peace"
