[In some correspondence his first name is spelled Abraham, but his attestation documents spell it Abram, as does his signature on those documents. Correspondence also suggests his mother's family name was Bright, but on his Attestation Papers he has it as "Lyawl" a misprint of Lyall - no doubt the recruiter's interpretation of his pronounciation.]

Abram was working in Iroquois Falls, Ontario when war was declared. This was a boom town at that time and he probably came there as a result of Dr. Grenfell's efforts to find work for young men from the
Labrador . There were several other men from Labrador who worked there and enlisted from there at the same time. He survived the war but had suffered lung damage from poison gas and it affected his breathing, since his lung capacity was reduced.
