[In
some correspondence his first name is spelled Abraham, but his attestation
documents spell it Abram, as does his signature on those documents. Correspondence
also suggests his mother's family name was Bright, but on his Attestation
Papers he has it as "Lyawl" a misprint of Lyall - no doubt the
recruiter's interpretation of his pronounciation.]
Abram
was working in Iroquois Falls, Ontario when war was declared. This was a
boom town at that time and he probably came there as a result of Dr. Grenfell's
efforts to find work for young men from the
Labrador
. There were several other
men from Labrador who worked there and enlisted from there at the same time.
He survived the war but had suffered lung damage from poison gas and it affected
his breathing, since his lung capacity was reduced.
